WHERE YOUR DOLLARS GO:
The Lemurian Shasta Classic Mountain Bike Race made a donation of $2,500 to Friends of Whiskeytown from the 2006 race proceeds. The funds were used to construct the above bridge at Whiskeytown National Recreation area. The bridge is located over a Brandy Creek tributary and is now a part of the race course.
The Shasta Trinity Trail: The Shasta Trinity Trail (STT) is a route which will link Redding to the Trinity Alps. Much of the STT will pass through Whiskeytown NRA. To accommodate the STT Whiskeytown NRA has begun construction of an approximately 7 mile hand dug single track trail that will link Sheep Camp to the Boulder Cr. Trail. The new trail will open a remote area of Whiskeytown’s backcountry where there are no existing roads or trails. The trail will pass through stands of old growth forest and offer unique views of Whiskeytown Lake and the surrounding area.
The Lemurian Shasta Classic organizers are very excited about this new trail and have committed to fund it annually until its completion (Fall 2009?). We won’t know if the trail will be used in the race until it’s complete, but it will add to Whiskeytown’s already impressive list of great mountain bike trails. Best of all, the federal government will match every dollar donated by the community during 2007. If you’d like to make a tax-deductible contribution for this trail please send it the Friends of Whiskeytown, P.O. Box 2, Whiskeytown CA 96095-1088.
